AYT Maths Topics: Algebra, Calculus and Geometry in the 40 Questions

AYT maths has 40 questions and carries 30% of both the SAY and the EA score. Here are the units behind it, how the 2026 paper split algebra and geometry, and how to study.

AYT maths topics decide a large part of your result if you aim for a SAY or EA program. The AYT maths test (Matematik) has 40 questions, and it makes up 30% of both the SAY and the EA score. It also goes much deeper than TYT basic maths, with calculus, trigonometry and analytic geometry. In this guide, we list the official units, break down the 2026 paper and give a practical study order.

Why AYT maths matters for SAY and EA

Both score types give AYT maths a weight of 30, next to 40 for TYT. In SAY, physics, chemistry and biology add 10 each. In EA, literature adds 18, history-1 adds 7 and geography-1 adds 5. So maths is the single biggest AYT test in both tracks.

To get a SAY or EA score at all, you need the TYT condition (0.5 net in Turkish or basic maths). You also need 0.5 net in one test of that score type. The AYT session gives 180 minutes for 160 questions in four tests, so most students answer only the tests their track uses. Our guide to AYT science topics covers the other half of SAY.

Where the official AYT maths topics come from

The 2026 YKS guide makes candidates responsible for MEB’s list of outcomes for the 2026 exams. This list follows the school grades from 9th to 12th. However, it does not say which topics belong to TYT and which belong to AYT. In fact, the 2026 AYT maths paper also used 9th- and 10th-grade topics, such as logic, sets and polynomials. So the AYT maths topics are not limited to 11th- and 12th-grade units.

MEB has also announced a new skills-based question model for YKS from 2028. For now, the exam structure stays the same, so the 2027 exam should follow the current lists. Still, check the 2027 guide when ÖSYM publishes it.

AYT maths topics by grade

9th and 10th grade

In 9th grade, the list covers logic, sets, and equations and inequalities with number sets, divisibility and exponents. It also has triangles (congruence, similarity, right triangles and trigonometry, area) and data. Then 10th grade adds counting and probability, functions, polynomials, quadratic equations, quadrilaterals and polygons, and solid geometry.

11th grade

The 11th-grade units are trigonometry, the analytic study of the line, applications of functions (the parabola and transformations), and systems of equations and inequalities. They also include circles and discs, solid geometry and conditional probability.

12th grade

Finally, 12th grade brings exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences and more trigonometry (sum and difference formulas, double angles, equations). It also covers transformations, derivatives (limits, continuity, the derivative and its uses), integrals and the analytic study of the circle.

How the 2026 paper split algebra and geometry

We counted the questions in ÖSYM’s 2026 AYT booklet. This is our own count, not an official split.

  • Questions 1–28, algebra and calculus: numbers, polynomials, functions, logic, sets, quadratics and the parabola, sequences and binomial expansion. Combinatorics, probability, logarithms, derivatives and integrals (area) came up too.
  • Questions 29–31, triangles and trigonometry: these were triangle problems that used trigonometry.
  • Questions 32–40, geometry: triangles, angles and arcs in circles, and the analytic geometry of points, lines, symmetry and circles. The last question asked for the volume of a solid.

So about 9 to 12 of the 40 questions were geometry or trigonometry, depending on how you count the trigonometry questions. Turkish education sites usually speak of about 10 geometry questions. Either way, geometry is roughly a quarter of the test. One more detail: ÖSYM cancelled question 23 of the 2026 maths test by court order, so 39 questions counted that year.

A practical study order for AYT maths topics

  1. Secure the TYT base first. Numbers, exponents, roots and equations support every later unit.
  2. Build the algebra core. Study functions and polynomials, then quadratic equations and the parabola.
  3. Add logarithms and sequences. Exponential and logarithmic functions rely on that algebra.
  4. Cover counting and probability. Then add the binomial expansion and conditional probability.
  5. Learn trigonometry step by step. Start with right triangles, then move to the 11th- and 12th-grade formulas.
  6. Leave enough months for calculus. Limits, derivatives and integrals build on functions, so start them by the middle of the year.

Run geometry alongside

Do not keep geometry for the end. Instead, give it one or two sessions every week, in this order: triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons, circles, analytic geometry and finally solids. As a result, the geometry and trigonometry questions become a steady source of nets.

AYT maths topics: tips for Arab and international students

  • Learn the Turkish maths terms. Words such as “türev” (derivative), “süreklilik” (continuity), “dizi” (sequence), “olasılık” (probability), “çember” (circle), “eğim” (slope) and “hacim” (volume) come up all the time.
  • Keep a formula notebook. Write trigonometric identities, derivative rules and area and volume formulas in one place, and review them weekly.
  • Practise without a calculator. ÖSYM bans calculators, so train tidy working in the margins of the booklet.
  • Use real past papers. ÖSYM’s past papers page has every AYT booklet and answer key since 2018.
  • Use the net rule wisely. Every four wrong answers cancel one correct answer, so skip a question when you have no idea.

How ILEAP Academy helps with AYT maths topics

ILEAP Academy is one of the first Arabic centers in Istanbul specialised in YKS. We start with a level test, so each student knows which AYT maths topics to fix first. Teachers explain maths in Arabic and also train the Turkish of the exam, because long question texts slow many students down. In addition, timed practice exams show your nets in maths and geometry, so you can follow your progress. We have three centers in Istanbul, and the same program also runs online. Discover ILEAP Academy to book a level test, then see our free YKS resources and the complete YKS exam guide.

Frequently asked questions

How many geometry questions are in AYT maths?

By our count of the 2026 paper, about 9 to 12 of the 40 questions were geometry or trigonometry, depending on how you count trigonometry. Turkish education sites usually say about 10. It is not an official split.

Do AYT maths topics include 9th- and 10th-grade units?

Yes. The 2026 paper used logic, sets and polynomials, which MEB’s list places in 9th and 10th grade. So review those units too.

Do EA students study the same AYT maths topics?

Yes. SAY and EA students sit the same AYT maths test, and it carries a weight of 30 in both score types.
