YKS Ranking Explained: What the Başarı Sırası Means and How to Use It

Universities fill their places by rank, not by score. Here is how the YKS ranking works, which rank counts for medicine or law, and how to set a realistic target from past years.

Your YKS ranking decides more about your future program than your score does. After the exam, ÖSYM gives every candidate a score and a rank (başarı sırası) for each score type, and universities then fill their places in rank order. In 2026, for example, 2,425,627 candidates applied for TYT, according to ÖSYM’s official 2026 figures. This guide explains what the ranking is, which rank the minimum rules use, how to read YÖK Atlas and how to estimate your target.

What is the YKS ranking?

The YKS ranking, or başarı sırası, is your position among all candidates with a score in the same type. For example, a SAY rank of 20,000 means you finished 20,000th among everyone with a SAY score. You get a separate rank for each score, so one student can have a TYT, a SAY and an EA rank at the same time.

ÖSYM does not send a result document. Instead, you see your results at sonuc.osym.gov.tr or in the ÖSYM mobile app. The page shows your answers per test, your scores and ranks, your diploma grade (OBP) and, finally, your placement scores and ranks.

Why rank matters more than score

Scores move from year to year, because ÖSYM standardises every test against that year’s candidates. Ranks are much steadier, so the same program tends to need a similar rank each year. Also, there is no point threshold (baraj) any more, so the real competition happens through the YKS ranking. Our guide to YKS score calculation explains how nets become scores.

Exam score, placement score and the rank that counts

Every YKS result has two layers. First comes the exam score, which ÖSYM calculates from your nets. Then ÖSYM adds a bonus from your diploma grade, OBP × 0.12, to get the placement scores: Y-TYT, Y-SAY, Y-EA, Y-SÖZ and Y-DİL. This bonus adds 30 to 60 points. However, it is halved for anyone placed through YKS the year before, even if they did not register.

Placement uses these scores, together with your choices and each program’s quota and conditions. So when people talk about the YKS ranking a program needs, they almost always mean the rank of the placement score, with the OBP included.

The rank behind the minimum rules

Some programs have an official minimum ranking. According to the 2026 programs and quotas guide, these rules use the placement-score rank in the program’s score type. Medicine, for instance, looks at your Y-SAY rank. Engineering and teaching use the same placement-score rank, but without extra points (ek puan). The 2026 minimums were:

  • SAY: medicine top 50,000, dentistry top 80,000, pharmacy top 100,000, architecture top 250,000 and engineering top 300,000.
  • EA: law top 100,000.
  • Teaching programs: top 300,000, including guidance and counselling (PDR).

If your rank misses the minimum, you cannot choose that program, and ÖSYM simply ignores the choice. In addition, foundation universities may set stricter limits. Our guide to YKS score types shows which programs use SAY, EA, SÖZ or DİL.

What the base rank on YÖK Atlas means

YÖK Atlas is the official database of university programs. For each program, it shows the “taban başarı sırası”, or base rank. In simple terms, this is the rank of the last candidate who got a place in the program’s general quota that year. So a base rank of 40,000 means the last student placed there ranked 40,000th.

ÖSYM’s programs and quotas guide shows the same figure for the previous year. It lists the lowest placement score in the general quota and the rank that score matched. Two marks deserve attention:

  • A row of dashes means the program is new, so it has no history yet.
  • An empty cell means the program did not fill its quota, so there was no lowest score.

YÖK Atlas also keeps several years side by side, for example the base ranks of 2024, 2025 and 2026. That history is the best starting point for your target.

How to estimate your target YKS ranking

A good target comes from real data, not from a feeling. These steps turn past years into a YKS ranking goal:

  1. List your programs. Write down five to ten programs you would really attend.
  2. Collect the base ranks. Note each program’s base rank for the last two or three years.
  3. Take the hardest year. Use the strongest of those ranks, the smallest number, and then add a safety margin.
  4. Check the official minimums. Make sure your target also meets any minimum ranking for that program.
  5. Turn the rank into a score. ÖSYM’s Sayısal Bilgiler report shows how many candidates reached each score level, so you can see roughly which score matched your rank.
  6. Translate the score into nets. With your teacher, set target nets per test, and then track them in timed practice exams.

A 2026 example: rank 50,000 in SAY

Here is step 5 with real numbers. In ÖSYM’s 2026 report, 63,669 candidates had a SAY placement score of 450 or more, while 44,919 had 470 or more. By our reading, rank 50,000 in SAY, the minimum for medicine, therefore sat somewhere between about 450 and 470 placement points. Treat this only as an approximate example, because the score behind a given rank changes every year.

For context, 1,135,718 candidates received a SAY score in 2026. So a SAY rank of 50,000 meant finishing ahead of more than 95% of them.

Common mistakes with the YKS ranking

  • Comparing your exam score with a program’s placement score, which includes the OBP.
  • Using last year’s base score instead of its base rank, although scores change more than ranks.
  • Reading a base rank as a promise, when it only shows where last year’s competition ended.
  • Ignoring the official minimum ranking, so a choice never counts.

Later, in the preference (tercih) period, you can list up to 24 programs, so mix ambitious choices with safer ones.

How ILEAP Academy helps you reach your target YKS ranking

ILEAP Academy is one of the first Arabic centers in Istanbul specialised in YKS. We start with a level test, so you know your nets from day one. Then teachers explain every topic in Arabic and train the Turkish of the exam step by step. Regular timed practice exams show how your nets move toward the rank your programs need. We have three centers in Istanbul, and the same program also runs online. Discover ILEAP Academy, and read our YKS study plan to organise your year.

Frequently asked questions

Is the YKS ranking based on the exam score or the placement score?

You see both on the results page. However, placement and the official minimum rules use the placement-score rank, which includes the OBP.

Where can I find last year’s base rank for a program?

On YÖK Atlas, which shows the base rank of each program for recent years.

Can I know my exact YKS ranking before the results?

No. Your exact rank depends on how every candidate performed that year. Still, past ÖSYM reports and your practice exams give you a useful estimate.
