Educational Field Trips for High School Students: Ideas and Planning
Good school trips start with a learning goal. Here are visit ideas for Grades 9–12, a planning timeline, the consent and staffing rules for schools in Türkiye, a safety checklist and reflection tasks.

The best field trip ideas start with a question, not a bus booking. A visit to a university lab, a factory floor or a technopark can show students what a career really looks like. Without a clear goal and careful planning, however, the same trip becomes a day off. This guide gives practical ideas for Grades 9 to 12, a planning timeline, the main MEB rules for schools in Türkiye, a safety checklist and reflection tasks that make the learning last.
Start with a goal before you choose field trip ideas
First, decide what students should know, see or decide after the visit. For example, Grade 10 students might compare three jobs in one sector, while Grade 12 students might test whether a major suits them. Then pick the place that serves that goal. MEB’s regulation on social activities lists natural, historical and cultural sites, science centres, art centres, technoparks and museums as out-of-school learning environments, linked to curriculum outcomes. So one well-chosen trip can support a subject and career guidance at the same time.

University visits
Campus tours work best when students do more than walk around. Ask the university for a short taster lecture, a lab demonstration and a question session with current students. Before the visit, each student prepares two questions about the major, admission or student life. Our guide to hosting a university fair shows how to coach those questions.
Company and workplace visits
Factories, logistics centres, banks, hotels, media studios, engineering firms and software companies all make strong visits. Ask the host for a short tour, a talk with employees at different levels and, if possible, a small hands-on task. In this way, students see the range of jobs inside one company, from technicians to managers. Check the host’s safety rules in advance, because many sites require closed shoes or protective equipment.
Labs, technoparks and science centres
Technoparks and research labs show how science turns into products and start-ups. Science centres suit younger grades and mixed groups. For older students, ask a researcher to explain one project from the first idea to the result.
Museums and cultural sites, with a career angle
Museums are not only for history lessons. Ask students to find the people behind the exhibition: curators, conservators, designers, guides and digital teams. That small twist turns a classic trip into career exploration.
A quick plan by grade
- Grade 9: a science centre, a museum’s behind-the-scenes tour or a local radio station.
- Grade 10: a factory, a technopark or a hospital training unit.
- Grade 11: a university faculty, an engineering firm or a media company.
- Grade 12: shortlisted universities, plus companies in each student’s chosen field.
Turn field trip ideas into a plan, step by step
- Six to eight weeks before: agree on the goal, contact the host and fix the date.
- Four weeks before: book safe, insured transport and write the trip plan.
- Three weeks before: send the consent form and an information letter to parents.
- One week before: confirm the timetable, the staff list and the emergency contacts.
- The day before: check the consent forms, medical notes and the final student list.
- After the trip: run the reflection tasks and thank the host.
Consent, staffing and approval: MEB rules in Türkiye
In Türkiye, school trips follow MEB’s Social Activities Regulation (Sosyal Etkinlikler Yönetmeliği, 2017, last amended in 2023). Its key points for trips are:
- Teachers collect a parental consent form (Veli İzin Belgesi, EK-5) before the trip and keep it in the trip file.
- Each group has a group leader (kafile başkanı) plus at least one and at most two teachers per 40 students. Special-education groups need at least two teachers per 10 students.
For timing, insurance and approval, the regulation also says:
- Trips that belong to the curriculum take place in lesson time, while other trips happen at weekends or in holidays.
- Accident insurance and vehicle choice follow the school trips framework contract (EK-6), and every vehicle must be insured.
- The school principal approves trips within the province. Outside the province, the local civil authority (mülki idare amiri) decides, and the governor’s office (valilik) approves trips abroad.
- For trips outside the district, the school informs the provincial or district education directorate in writing at least three days before.
Schools in other countries usually follow similar principles: written parental consent, a trip plan the school approves, insurance and enough staff. However, always check your own ministry’s current rules.
A field trip safety checklist
- A final student list, with a head count at every stop.
- Signed consent forms and parents’ phone numbers.
- Medical notes, allergies and medicines, with one teacher in charge.
- A first-aid kit and the venue’s emergency procedures.
- Buddy pairs and a clear meeting point.
- Insured transport and the vehicle documents.
- The host’s dress code and safety equipment rules.
Reflection tasks that make field trip ideas stick
Learning continues when the bus returns. Before the trip, students write what they expect to see and two questions to ask. During the visit, give them a short observation sheet: three jobs they saw, one skill each job needs and one surprise. Afterwards, ask each student to write a short reflection or present one career to the class. Finally, link the results to each student’s career plan, so the trip feeds later choices. How ILEAP helps schools with field trip ideas
ILEAP’s ELITE package includes educational field trips for Grade 12 students, as part of a complete partnership that stays with students until graduation day. The ILEAP team handles planning, coordination with experts and universities, and delivery, while the school provides one point of contact. As a result, trips connect with career coaching, field experts and University Open Days in one program. Partner with ILEAP or explore the program.
Frequently asked questions
