Conditional vs Unconditional Offer: What Your Admission Letter Means
Admission letters can be confusing. Here is what a conditional or unconditional offer means, how to reply on time and what happens if you miss a condition.

A conditional offer means a university will give you a place once you meet certain conditions, usually exam results or a language level. An unconditional offer means you have already met the entry requirements. The difference sounds simple, but the wording of an admission letter can be confusing, and the reply deadlines matter. This guide explains how to read your letter, how UCAS firm and insurance choices work, what conditional admission looks like in Germany and Türkiye, and what to do if you miss a condition.
What is a conditional offer?
According to UCAS, a conditional offer shows the conditions you have to meet before the university confirms your place. These are usually exam results, for example A-level grades or a number of UCAS Tariff points. For international students, the letter may also name a final diploma grade or an English test score.
So a conditional offer is a real offer, not a maybe. If you meet every condition, the place is yours. However, if you miss one, the university decides what happens next.
Conditional offer vs unconditional offer
An unconditional offer means you have already met the requirements, so the place is yours if you want it. Still, you may have some tasks to complete, such as sending proof of your results or passing financial or medical checks. Also, if you accept an unconditional offer as your firm choice on UCAS, you cannot hold an insurance choice.
The difference matters for your visa too. A UK Student visa needs an unconditional offer, which your university confirms with a CAS number. Then you must apply for the visa within six months of receiving the CAS, as GOV.UK explains. In other words, a conditional offer has to become unconditional before you can apply.
How to read your admission letter
Before you reply, read the whole letter slowly and note:
- The exact course, campus and start date.
- Each condition, written exactly as in the letter: grades, subjects, test scores or documents.
- The date by which you must meet the conditions.
- Your deadline to reply, and how to reply.
- Any documents or payments the university asks for.
- A contact person or office for questions.
If any condition is unclear, email the admissions office and keep the answer. A short written reply now can save a stressful summer later.
Firm and insurance choices on UCAS
Once your decisions arrive, UCAS lets you hold two offers at most. Your firm choice is your first choice. Your insurance choice is your backup, which you can only have when your firm choice is a conditional offer. UCAS advises an insurance with lower conditions, but still a place you would be happy to go. You must then decline all your other offers. Also, once results come out, you cannot swap your firm and insurance choices.
Reply deadlines for 2027 entry
Your deadline depends on when your last university decision arrives, according to the UCAS page on replying to offers:
- Last decision by 31 March 2027: reply by 5 May 2027.
- Last decision by 12 May 2027: reply by 2 June 2027.
- Last decision by 14 July 2027, including Extra: reply by 21 July 2027.
If you miss your deadline, UCAS may decline your choices automatically. You then have 14 days to call UCAS and ask to swap the decision back. After 22 July 2027, however, no reply swaps are possible. So put your date in your calendar the day your last decision arrives.
A conditional offer outside the UK
Germany: a language course or Studienkolleg
In Germany, admission sometimes depends on a preparatory step. German residence law, § 16b AufenthG, counts two such steps as part of studying. The first is a preparatory language course, when a university has admitted you to full-time study on condition that you attend it. The second is a Studienkolleg, once you prove you have a place there.
For example, the German Embassy in Amman’s student visa leaflet (September 2026) asks for German at B2 or higher for a German-taught degree. With a preparatory language course or a Studienkolleg, B1 is enough. Accepted certificates include telc, ÖSD, Goethe-Institut and TestDaF. Also, a preparatory course must start at least four weeks after your visa appointment. Universities differ, though, and some do not offer conditional admission for missing German at all. So check your letter’s wording and your own embassy’s leaflet.
Türkiye: the prep year
In Türkiye, language conditions usually work through a prep year at the university. Our guide to English-taught programs in Turkey explains how the prep year and its exemptions work. For the wider admission process, see our guide to university admission in Türkiye.
Missed a condition of your conditional offer?
Do not panic, and act quickly. On UCAS results day, these outcomes are possible, according to UCAS’s page on what your application status means:
- You miss your firm conditions but meet your insurance ones: you get a place at your insurance choice. If you do not want it, you can use “Decline my place” and go into Clearing.
- You narrowly miss: your university may still consider your place, so call the admissions office the same day.
- The university makes a changed course offer: this means a different course, start date or entry point. You must reply within five days, or you lose the offer.
- You meet neither set of conditions: your status becomes unsuccessful, and you can look for a place in Clearing. For 2027 entry, Clearing opens on 2 July 2027.
Outside UCAS, write to the international office at once. Ask whether a later start date, a resit or another program is possible. If you need a year to retake a test, our guide to the gap year shows how to plan it well.
How ILEAP helps you manage each conditional offer
In ILEAP partner schools, university awareness sessions explain admission requirements, language tests, documents, deadlines and costs before students apply. University Open Days then let students ask university representatives their questions directly. Later, on the iLEAP platform, students track their personal applications and documents in one place, which helps them see every condition and deadline at a glance. See the university decisions tools or learn more about university awareness.
Frequently asked questions
Is a conditional offer a real offer?
Yes. Once you meet all the conditions, the place is yours. If you miss one, the university decides whether to confirm your place.
Can I hold two offers on UCAS?
Yes: a firm choice and an insurance choice. However, you can only add an insurance choice when your firm choice is a conditional offer.
Do I need an unconditional offer for a student visa?
For the UK, yes, because the CAS confirms an unconditional offer. Germany works differently: an admission tied to a preparatory language course, or a Studienkolleg place, can support a student residence permit.
