YKS Private Lessons or a Course? An Honest Comparison for Families
Private lessons and group courses both help students prepare for YKS, but in different ways. Here is a fair comparison and a checklist to help your family choose.

YKS private lessons are often what parents think of first when their child struggles with maths or Turkish. A good private teacher can change a lot in one subject. However, YKS is a long exam with many subjects, timed tests and a ranking at the end, so the format of preparation really matters. In this guide, we compare private lessons with group courses, explain when each one works best and give you a checklist to use before you pay.
What YKS private lessons do well
The biggest strength of YKS private lessons is attention. The teacher works only with your child, so every minute goes to that student’s questions and mistakes. In addition, the pace follows the student. A teacher can stay on fractions for a week, or skip a topic the student already knows.
Private lessons are also flexible. You choose the day, the time and sometimes the place, which helps students with a heavy school timetable. Finally, a shy student often asks more questions when no classmates are listening.
When YKS private lessons make the most sense
- One weak subject. For example, a student who is strong in science but weak in TYT maths.
- A clear gap. Some students missed a school year or changed country, so they need a fast catch-up on the basics.
- Very high goals. A student aiming for medicine may add a few lessons for the hardest AYT topics.
- A very busy timetable. Sometimes a fixed group schedule does not fit at all.
The limits of YKS private lessons
YKS covers many subjects. TYT alone tests Turkish, basic maths, science and social sciences, and AYT goes deeper into the subjects of your score type. So YKS private lessons with a single teacher rarely cover all of them well. As a result, families often end up with three or four teachers, and the cost and the planning grow quickly.
YKS private lessons also miss part of the exam experience. TYT has 120 questions in 165 minutes, and AYT has 160 questions in 180 minutes. Students need regular timed practice exams in the real format, plus a review of every net. Many private teachers focus on topics instead. Finally, the quality depends on one person, so a trial lesson is essential.
What a YKS course does well
A good course gives a complete program. Every subject of your score type has a place in the weekly plan, and the teachers work as a team. Our guide to YKS score types shows why this matters: each track mixes different tests.
Courses also run regular timed practice exams (deneme). After each one, students see their nets in every test and the topics behind their mistakes. In addition, a group creates healthy pressure, because students see how others progress.
In Türkiye, a YKS prep course must hold an MEB permit as a private teaching course (özel öğretim kursu). You can ask to see it. MEB licenses courses, but there is no separate official quality label for YKS centres. So check any big claims in ads carefully.
The limits of a group course
- A fixed pace. The group moves together, so a student far behind may feel lost.
- Shared attention. In large groups, quiet students can hide, so group size matters.
- Travel time. A long commute takes hours from study, unless the course also runs online.
YKS private lessons or a course: a quick comparison
- Attention: private lessons give full attention, while a course shares it within a group.
- Subjects: a course usually covers the whole score type, whereas one tutor often covers one or two subjects.
- Practice exams: courses usually run them regularly, but with private lessons you must organise them yourself.
- Motivation: a group gives rhythm and comparison, while a tutor gives close personal follow-up.
- Cost: YKS private lessons usually cost more per hour than a place in a group.
- Flexibility: private lessons win, although online courses close part of the gap.
The hybrid option
Many families combine both. The course gives the full plan, the practice exams and the rhythm. Then a few YKS private lessons fix one weak topic before it costs too many nets. In addition, the free MEBİ platform from MEB offers monthly mock exams in Turkish, which are useful extra practice. Our YKS study plan guide shows how to fit everything into a week.
A checklist before you pay
- A level test first. Whoever teaches your child should start by measuring the real level.
- The teaching language. Ask how topics are explained and how exam Turkish is trained. Our guide to Turkish for YKS explains why this matters.
- Timed practice exams. Check that they follow the real format, such as the sample TYT booklet from ÖSYM.
- Follow-up. Find out who reviews the nets and how often parents hear about progress.
- The licence. For a course, ask for the MEB permit.
- A written offer. Get the hours, subjects, dates and full fee on paper.
- No guarantees. Nobody controls the ranking, so a promised place or score is a red flag.
How ILEAP Academy can help
ILEAP Academy is one of the first Arabic centers in Istanbul specialised in YKS. Every student starts with a level test, then joins a small group at the right level. We explain topics in Arabic, train the Turkish of the exam step by step and run timed practice exams with clear net reports. When a student needs it, we also add extra lessons on weak topics. We have three centers in Istanbul, and the same program runs online. Discover ILEAP Academy to book a level test, and read our guide on choosing a YKS course in Istanbul for more questions to ask.
Frequently asked questions
Are YKS private lessons better than a course?
Not always. They are better for one weak subject or a clear gap. A course is usually better for the full program and for regular practice exams.
Can a student prepare with private lessons only?
Yes, but the family then has to organise a full plan for every subject, plus timed practice exams. Without them, students often know the topics but run out of time.
When should we start preparing?
As early as possible. ÖSYM usually holds YKS in June, so starting in the autumn gives about eight months for a complete plan.
